Mediacom Business, a division of Mediacom Communications Corporation, announced an agreement to provide a dedicated fiber connection with Gigabit internet speeds to the Missouri Innovation Center (MIC), a flagship, non-profit, incubator organization focused on leveraging research and innovation produced in conjunction with the University of Missouri, for the economic benefit of the region and the state. The agreement with the MIC is due in part to a company-wide initiative called Project Open Road, a significant
capital expenditure to proactively connect more businesses to their network and provide the level of broadband capacity that is critical for commercial and research facilities like the MIC.

The Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau in partnership with the Columbia Hospitality Association will present Columbia’s 13th Annual Hospitality Star Night on March 22nd. Star Night serves to recognize members of our local lodging community who go above and beyond and truly define the word “hospitality” in their work.

The Central Bank of Boone County Lobby Gallery, located inside the Downtown Bank at 8th and Broadway, features the paintings of Robert Seat, Mike Seat, and Eric Seat through April 25th, 2017. The Lobby Gallery is free and open to the public Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon.

The Boone County Office of Emergency Management in conjunction with the National Weather Service and Boone County Joint Communications took part in Severe Weather Awareness Week from Monday, March 6 until Friday, March 10. The week offered opportunities for community members, businesses and families to review their plans, kits, and shelter locations to ensure familiarity in the event of severe weather in our community.

To kick off National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, the Boone County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office is hosting a 5K walk/run on Sunday, April 2, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. in Stephens Lake Park. Participation in the event is free and the first 300 participants will receive a free t-shirt. Participants are asked to pre-register for the event.

The Donald Danforth Plant Sciences Center in St. Louis, Missouri recently hired Loriana Sekarski, president of BONSAI™, to conduct a half-day workshop for 28 scientists desiring to improve their leadership and interpersonal skills.  The highly interactive session was called “eye-opening” by one scientist who shared about her newfound awareness of intentionally emphasizing different strengths depending on the situation or task at hand.

Awards, promotions and new hires

Socket, a Missouri-based telephone and internet service provider, is proud to announce the addition of Casey Wilson to its business sales team. Wilson will work with Socket’s business clients across the state to provide high-speed internet, local telephone and other telecommunications services.

Paycor was named a 2017 Top Rated Core HR Software Platform by software users on TrustRadius for the second consecutive year. This marks Paycor’s second consecutive recognition for both Small Businesses (1-50 employees) and Mid-sized Companies (51-1,000 employees), and Paycor is one of only eight HCM platforms to receive the premier rating.

Job Point announced its 2016 Award Recipients during its Annual Awards Banquet on March 9th.

  • From over 400 persons served, two individuals were honored for outstanding employment and personal triumph with an Award of Excellence. Lakeela Mings, an information specialist at the Columbia Chamber of Commerce and current Job Point Board Member, and Beau Leach, employed at the Peter’s Heating and Air Conditioning as a Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Technician (HVAC).
  • John Scalise, Manager of Rehabilitation Services, was honored as the Employee of the Year for his dedication and service to others.
  • Super 8 East was selected as the Employer of the Year for supporting the talents of individuals seeking employment and continuing the professional development of their employees.
  • Lenoir Woods was honored as Partner of the Year for their outstanding support.
  • Donna Beckett, former Board Director, and current Comedy Night fundraiser coordinator was acknowledged as Volunteer of the Year for her invaluable contributions and continued commitment.
  • Avery Nelson, 2015 Award of Excellence winner and YouthBuild graduate, was honored with the inaugural Gary J. Taylor Memorial Award for the pursuit of continuing education.

Williams-Keepers LLC recently welcomed two full-time associates to the firm’s Columbia office. Lindsey Benson joined WK in February as a project coordinator and receptionist. She has six years of experience as an office representative in the insurance industry. Madison Buecker joined WK in January as a tax associate. She recently graduated from the University of Missouri with a Master of Accountancy degree.

Central Bank of Boone County announced three employee promotions made in February. Jimmy Nickles was promoted to assistant branch manager at the Motor Bank. Assistant branch managers help in the day to day management of the branch. Robert Reil of the Mall Bank, located inside Columbia Mall, was promoted to the senior teller. Senior tellers lead the branches operationally and assist fellow tellers when needed. Amanda Baker was promoted to teller II at the West Broadway Bank. Employees are hired as a teller I then, once they’ve completed their training and have had six months of successful experience, they are promoted to a teller II.

Central Bank of Boone County has named Donna Zumwalt as this year’s recipient of The Dorothy Jacobs Customer Service Award. Those who exemplify outstanding customer service and act as a positive role model receive the award.
