Chamber Endorses Prop 1 – County Road and Bridge Tax

The Columbia Chamber of Commerce has endorsed Boone County Proposition 1 on the August 8 special election ballot. Prop 1 renews a half-penny countywide sales tax to provide significant funding for the next decade for good county roads and bridges. Prop 1 also continues county-shared funding for City of Columbia projects more than $18 million during the last decade.

“Columbia and all of Boone County benefit from good roads and bridges, and the Prop 1 funding has helped deliver ambitious City of Columbia projects, such as the major expansion and upgrade of Scott Boulevard,” said Matt McCormick, President of the Columbia Chamber. “Prop 1 will provide a critical portion of the next decade of funding for good roads and bridges in Boone County. It’s the right thing to do, for economic development and public safety.”

The approach of Prop 1 was first approved by local voters nearly 25 years ago. In 1993, in exchange for a significant reduction in the county property tax used for roads, voters approved the half-penny sales tax dedicated to roads and bridges. Voters renewed this approach in 1997 and 2007. It means ongoing major property tax relief for Columbia business and residential property owners, while hundreds of thousands of visitors to Columbia and Boone County help pay their own way for wear and tear on roads and bridges.

“It’s important to note that Prop 1 is a nonpartisan issue, with broad support across the community. This is not a new tax, and the dollars are dedicated to road and bridge projects and sharing revenues with Columbia and other Boone County communities. The 10-year sunset assures accountability to voters. That’s why the Columbia Chamber of Commerce urges a YES vote on Prop 1, It’s a vote for good roads and bridges, economic development and public safety,” McCormick said.

The Columbia Chamber of Commerce was established in 1905 and is a voluntary, member-supported organization of business, industrial and professional people who are dedicated to developing, promoting and maintaining a sound and healthy economic climate for Columbia.  The Columbia Chamber of Commerce is recognized as a 5-Star Accredited Chamber by the United States Chamber of Commerce.
