The Taste of Mid-Missouri is coming up on March 13 from 5:30 – 8 p.m. at The University Club on the University of Missouri Campus.

110 teams from throughout Missouri will compete in the Show-Me STATE GAMES Mpix Hoopin’ It Up Basketball Tournament. Thousands of competitors and spectators came together at various locations, including the Mizzou Student Recreation Center. Mpix Hoopin’ It Up Basketball is a fundraiser for the Show-Me STATE GAMES.

On February 17, receptacles for citizens to deposit American flags that are worn, tattered, ripped or soiled beyond repair were made available in the lobbies of the Boone County Government Center and the Columbia Public Library. These are in addition to the flag receptacle already available at the VFW, Post 280, Boone County at 1509 Ashley Street in Columbia. VFW, Post 280, Boone County will collect the flags every two weeks beginning March 3 and will retire them with the proper requirements for retirement of the US Colors in accordance with established protocol. As a matter of respect, citizens are asked to fold the flags prior to placing them in the receptacle; they should not be tossed in or “wadded up.”

The Boone County Office of Emergency Management in conjunction with the National Weather Service hosted a SkyWarn training class on February 23.Those that attended the class received the option of becoming trained weather spotters with the National Weather Service. Once registered, volunteer weather spotters help to keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service. The information provided by trained weather spotters, combined with Doppler radar and improved satellite data, allow for a more timely and accurate warning for tornados, severe thunderstorms and flash flood events in our community.

Nanova, Inc., closed on investments of $10 million in 2016, bringing total investments in the startup to $19 million since its founding in 2007. Nanova is an early stage high-tech company. Nanova employs various advanced technologies, such as nanotechnology and low-temperature plasma technology, in developing medical/dental devices, environmental products and pharmaceutical therapies.

Gary Kremer, author of Race & Meaning: The African American Experience in Missouri (U. of Missouri Press, 2014), spoke at the Boone County Historical Society as the February feature in the Meet the Author series, Kremer shared the best of his decades-long research in African American life in the state of Missouri.

James W. Endersby, co-author of Lloyd Gaines and the Fight to End Segregation (U. of Missouri Press, 2016), spoke at the Columbia Public Library Friends Room. He examined the 1938 U.S. Supreme Court case for MU to admit a black man, Lloyd Gaines, to its School of Law or create a separate law school to accommodate him. The court case drew national headlines, and the NAACP moved Gaines to Chicago after he received death threats. Before he could attend law school, Gaines vanished.




Commerce Bank recently announced the promotion of Shane O’Neil and Paul Roberts to the role of retail banking officer and branch manager.  Their responsibilities include business development and customer service related to the bank’s consumer banking, lending and small business services.

Providence Bank announced the promotion of Lori Owen to Bank Officer, Loan Systems Specialist. Owen has over 9 years of banking and lending experience.

Socket is announced that Amanda Blumhorst, CPA, recently joined the company as its new controller. Blumhorst brings nearly 15 years of accounting and finance experience to Socket. She previously served as director of financial operations for Alternative Community Training (ACT) for 12 years and controller for Grand Lodge of A.F. & A.M. of the state of Missouri.

New Belgium Brewing has awarded national top honors to Skyland Distributing of Asheville, NC, RMC Distributing Co. of Colorado Springs, CO and N.H. Scheppers of Columbia and Jefferson City, MO as part of their 2016 Distributor of the Year Award. The award recognizes distributor partners who have gone above and beyond in the areas of market plan execution, new beer launches and sustainability efforts.
