  • Boone County is hosting a career fair on April 10 from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Boone county Training Annex (2111 County Dr). You can talk with recrutiters from the Sheriff’s Department, Joint Communications, Office of Emergency Management and Boone County Fire Protection District. You can get tours of the Emergency Communications Center, Boone County Fire Protection District Training Center, check out patrol cars and fire trucks and you will be able to apply on-site.
  • Westlake Ace Hardware hosted a community Open House event to celebrate the opening of its expanded Westlake Pet Supply pet department as well as a new Hallmark Gold Crown store located within that Westlake Ace Hardware store. The expanded pet department features over 2,000 square feet of pet food, toys, bedding, and health items, as well as a specially-designed “treat bar” with dog treats available for purchase by the pound.
  • The City of Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau’s (CVB) Annual Report for City Fiscal Year 2017 (FY17) is now available online. The report presents results in the CVB’s key year-end measurement areas, summarizes projects from the year and describes upcoming projects for 2018. Highlights from the report include an increase in tourism-related spending in Boone County, which went from over $412 million in FY16 to over $420 million in FY17. Tourism-related employment also rose to 12,272. Overall Visitor Satisfaction, Website Visits and Hotel Occupancy also saw increases over FY16 levels.
  • FFO Home announced it has acquired Service Furniture and Bedding, Inc, a leading operator of home furnishings and bedding retailers in the greater Louisville, Ky. area. The acquisition includes 13 stores operating under the Furniture Liquidators banner, and 15 Mattress and More Bedding stores. FFO Home now moves into the top 50 home furnishing retailers. This is the first acquisition activity to complement aggressive organic growth since FFO Home received an investment from an affiliate of private equity firm Sun Capital Partners, Inc. in 2016.

  • Central Bank of Boone County announces six employee promotions made in January. Ben Chism of the Downtown Bank has been promoted to merchant card specialist. Montana Reno of the Downtown Bank has been promoted to senior commercial lending assistant. Ellen Thieme of the Woodrail Bank, Jessica Lozano of the West Broadway and Samuel Crisman of the Rockbridge Bank have been promoted to teller II. The bank’s Customer Service Center, which assists customers with account maintenance by telephone, promoted Katie Plassmeyer to customer service representative.

Non-Profit News

  • Job Point proudly announced its 2017 Award Recipients during its Annual Awards Banquet at the Reynolds Alumni Center at the University of Missouri on February 15th.  From over 400 persons served, two individuals were honored for outstanding employment and personal triumph with an Award of Excellence. Timothy Archer is an HVAC Technician at Master Tech, after completing Job Point’s Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning course. Kevin Smith is a Cart Associate employed at Walmart, after participating in Job Point’s Supported Employment Services. Job Point salutes these remarkable individuals for their resolve in overcoming barriers to employment. Carrie Brown, Placement Specialist for our YouthBuild program, was honored as the Employee of the Year for her dedication and service to others. Arris’ Pizza was selected as the Employer of the Year for supporting the talents of individuals seeking employment. The Bluffs was honored as Partner of the Year for their outstanding support with our Certified Nursing Assistant classes. Samantha Christensen, summer Marketing Intern, was acknowledged as Volunteer of the Year for her invaluable contributions.
  • In its 17th year, Great Circle Golf Classic for Kids will offer a competitive day of golfing and fun, with our exclusive VIP guest experience, at the Columbia Country Club. VIP golfers will receive premium gifts and benefits, with registration and an exclusive deluxe hot breakfast beginning at 9 a.m. General teams register at 10 a.m., followed by a box lunch for all and the shot-gun start at 11 a.m. Players will compete for prizes on Columbia’s novelty game holes. The day culminates with an awards reception, including appetizers on the club patio. Funds raised through this event stay right here in our own community, helping to transform the lives of youth and strengthening families.   • The Food Bank fo Central &Northeast Missouri announced Float Your Boat for The Food Bank will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 28, at Bass Pro Shops. Mid-Missouri’s only cardboard boat regatta, Float Your Boat allows teams to create boats made entirely of cardboard and race them across Bass Pro Shops Lake. The event is free to spectators.
