  • KOMU 8 won three regional Edward R. Murrow Awards this week. Awarded by the Radio Television Digital News Association, the Murrow Awards recognize outstanding achievements in electronic journalism. KOMU 8 was awarded Excellence in Website for general excellence for; Excellence in Social Media for team coverage of the GOP gubernatorial debate in March 2016; and Excellence in Innovation for KOMU 8’s unique Target 8 Town Square programming, which combines viewer surveys, social media and investigative reporting into a single-issue newscast.
  • KRCG 13 is excited to announce the launch of aerial news gathering with an unmanned aircraft system (UAS). These unmanned aerial vehicles, more commonly known as drones are becoming an important part of news gathering. A drone can fly places where helicopters and planes cannot, providing a unique perspective. KRCG 13 has two FAA regulated and licensed drone pilots.
  • Everyone has the ability to attend the Missouri Employment Conference on May 16th. The intent of the conference is to improve, innovate and motivate by ensuring Missouri has the most up-to-date and relevant topics coupled with the most dynamic speakers available. The mission of the Missouri Employment Conference is to deliver an affordable conference that provides the opportunity to develop professionally, as well as receive continuing education credits through multiple professional associations.
  • Retired 13th Circuit Court Judge Gary Oxenhandler presented the 2017 Boone County Jail Population Study to the Boone County Judicial & Law Enforcement Task Force on April 19th at the Boone County Government Center Commission Chambers. Judge Oxenhandler prepared a study of the historical and current status of the jail population in the Boone County Jail, which can be found here:

  • Join Columbia Business Times and presenting sponsor, Midwest Computech, for a presentation celebrating cultural diversity and steps toward inclusion led by speaker Kevin McDonald, Interim Inclusion Chancellor at The University of Missouri. Approaching diversity work with an open mind, proven research and a plan of execution can achieve undeniable results. This presentation will explore foundational definitions and strategies for moving diversity and inclusion efforts forward in any organization, with an eye towards transformational results. The event will be on May 3rd at the Reynolds Alumni Center from 9- 10: 30 a.m.
  • The Missouri Department of Economic Development and the City of Columbia announced that Aurora Organic Dairy (AOD), a leading producer and processor of store-brand organic milk and butter for U.S. retailers, plans to construct a new dairy processing facility in Columbia, which would create more than 90 jobs initially, and up to 150 total new jobs over the next five years.
  • Central Bank of Boone County co-hosted a free fraud prevention seminar on April 27th with the Columbia Police Department and the Boone County Sheriff’s Department.  With all types of fraud increasing in our community, the seminar will focus on the latest scams and tactics used to fool people out of their money. Speakers at the seminar are Detective Chris Lester, Boone County Sheriff’s Department, Detective Julie Ray, Columbia Police Department and Vice President Angie Gentry from Central Bank of Boone County.



  • Central Bank of Boone County announces four employee promotions made in March. Hannah Morrow, Sophie Lingle, and Lauren Sherrow were promoted to teller II. Employees are hired as a teller I then, once they’ve completed their training and have had six months of successful experience, they are promoted to a teller II. Austin Gaughan was also promoted to commercial loan officer. Commercial loan officers develop and manage credit relations with individuals and businesses who seek a variety of loans.
  • Central Bank of Boone County has named Kristen Moore manager of the Motor Bank located on East Walnut Street and Cassie Kauffman manager of the Mall Bank located inside Columbia Mall. Managers oversee the day-to-day operations of the branch, including management of the staff, leadership in sales and service, and administrative and compliance functions.

Non-Profit News

  • In an effort to recognize the valuable work of volunteers in the Columbia community, Voluntary Action Center, Joe Machens Dealerships, Landmark Bank, and the Columbia Daily Tribune joined together to present the Hero Awards. The Hero Awards reception were held on April 24th. Award categories were: Individual Volunteer of the Year, Group Volunteer of the Year, Youth Volunteer of the Year, Outstanding Volunteer in Education or Literacy, Outstanding Volunteer in Community Protection, Outstanding Volunteer in Health Care, and Outstanding Volunteer in the Arts.
  • ACT has been nominated for APSE’s Best Practices Award. The Association for Persons Supporting Employment First (APSE) is an organization dedicated to inclusive hiring practices. Every year at its annual conference, APSE recognizes an agency for outstanding accomplishments in promoting state-of-the-art practices in Employment First. On June 20-22, the best from across the nation will gather in Portland for the announcement. ACT has made many changes during the last several years in response to a Federal Medicaid waiver redefinition. With little time to make the mandatory adjustments, ACT focused on individuals served in the program and its mission. Now, all employment services are provided in the community and have the goal of preparing and connecting individuals with disabilities to high-quality employment and opportunities to excel. Being nominated for a National Award is a great reflection of the value and quality of the work we are doing each and every day at ACT.
