YesOn2: The Columbia Chamber of Commerce endorses Missouri Medicaid expansion

Yes on 2 for MO

On Thursday, July 23, 2020, during a routine meeting, the Columbia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors unanimously voted to endorse Medicaid expansion in Missouri. The Chamber has previously endorsed Medicaid expansion within its 2014 Legislative Agenda.

The board’s decision came from numerous factors including independent studies. States that have already enacted expansion have projected that an expansion in Missouri would boost job creation by about 16,000 jobs per year for five years, as well as expand our state’s economic output by $2.5 billion. Others have also found that Medicaid expansion could save the state as much as $1.3 billion by 2026, with the additional federal dollars offsetting current state health spending.

“In the light of COVID-19, we cannot underestimate the importance of our healthcare industry,” said Chamber President and CEO, Matt McCormick. “Medicaid expansion will help create jobs at our local healthcare facilities while expanding our economic output and saving our state money.”

If approved, Medicaid expansions will help deliver healthcare to over 200,000 Missourians.

The Columbia Chamber of Commerce joins other chamber endorsements including the Missouri Chamber of Commerce & Industry, the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, the St. Louis Regional Chamber of Commerce, and the Independence Chamber of Commerce.

Yes on 2

Missouri is now one of 13 states to not have passed expansion, after Oklahoma passed it on July 1, 2020. Missouri’s current Medicaid program, MO HealthNet, does not cover most adults without children, and its income eligibility threshold for parents is one of the lowest in the nation at about one-fifth of the poverty level.

The expansion, if approved by voters, would make all adults in Missouri ages 19 to 65 whose income is 133% of the federal poverty level or below eligible for Medicaid benefits, in addition to those who already qualify. If approved, Medicaid expansions will help deliver healthcare to over 200,000 Missourians.

Bring Funds to Missouri

On Tuesday, August 4, all Missourians will have the chance to vote Yes On 2 to bring more than a billion of our tax dollars back into our communities every year, rather than leave it on the table in Washington, D.C. Since its initial failure to make the ballot in 2014, our state and communities have been missing out on these needed funds to keep rural hospitals open, provide access to healthcare for those most in need, and to protect and grow our healthcare industry
